Practice Policies & Procedures
Following is some information about my practice policies and procedures.
Psychological Services
By law, you are entitled to receive information from me about my methods of therapy, the techniques used, the duration of your therapy, if known, and the fee structure. It is challenging to make general statements about what psychotherapy is, but the best results are typically seen when people enter actively into a collaborative process with the psychologist, working effortfully and intentionally both in session and between sessions to pursue goals to address problems you are experiencing. If you ever have questions about my philosophy or techniques/procedures, you are encouraged to ask me about that when those questions or concerns arise. The experience of psychotherapy and the reactions to psychotherapy vary greatly and are partially driven by the background and history of the individual, their personality, and the nature of the problems being addressed. Often, but not always, one can experience “feeling worse” before “feeling better,” which is consistent with the potential necessity to confront uncomfortable feelings of many types, again depending on the nature of the problem(s) for which you are seeking help. The benefits of psychotherapy are also varied but typically include growth in personal awareness and developmental maturity, an increase in functioning in your roles in life, an increased ability to regulate and/or tolerate strong emotion, and improved functioning and satisfaction across different types of relationships in your life. Results vary greatly and there are no guarantees related to what you will experience.
The way I approach psychotherapy is to spend the first couple of sessions learning about your needs, experience of your life, and listening to what you want to change. This will enable me to formulate recommendations for how we could approach your psychotherapy, thus empowering you to decide if working with me and working in therapy in these ways seem to be a good fit. (Please see “About Me” section of the website) The potential for a trusting therapeutic relationship is the most important part of choosing a therapist, one that needs to be approached carefully given the investment of time, energy, and money involved. Should you choose to continue with psychotherapy, we will arrange a regular time to meet and speak about the frequency of our sessions, which can vary depending on the stages of treatment. I will do my best to give an accurate assessment of a range of the duration of the therapy, but please remember that this is not an exact science given the nature of the work, and I consistently encourage conversation about your feelings about how the therapy is going and any concerns or questions you have.
Professional Fees
I provide individual psychotherapy sessions in person, and virtually via video or telephone. My fee is $200 per clinical hour (45-50 minutes) if paying with credit (IvyPay, PayPal, credit cards, ApplePay). I discount this to $195 per clinical hour when paying by cash, personal check, or electronic funds transfer (e.g., Venmo, Zelle, QuickPay). Payment is expected at the conclusion of each session. I do not send bills, carry a balance, and do not accept insurance. I will be happy to provide verification of services via a monthly superbill, or by signing any reimbursement paperwork you present that you can then send to your insurance provider. Please talk to me if you have specific questions about this or any matter related to fees.
Late Cancellations and No Shows
I do not charge for appointments cancelled at least 24 hours in advance. Appointments not cancelled 24 hours in advance are subject to a $100 “Late cancellation” fee the first time this happens, regardless of the reason, and any subsequent occurrences will be charged a full session fee. Appointments missed without notification will be subject to a $100 “No Show” fee the first time and the full session fee thereafter. Please talk to me about any questions or concerns you may have about this.
"If you are pained by any external thing, it is not this thing that disturbs you, but your own judgment about it. And it is in your power to wipe out this judgment now."
– Marcus Aurelius
Availability
Due to my work schedule and the nature of my practice, I am often not readily available by phone, so it will be necessary to leave a voicemail message at Rising Sun Therapy Services at 720-767-3410. I do not provide crisis coverage so if you believe you may need this we will discuss your individual circumstances at the time you enter into psychotherapy. At any time, if you are unable to reach me and feel you cannot wait for a return call, contact your primary care physician, contact the Crisis Line at 988, go to your nearest emergency room, or dial 911. I will make arrangements for coverage when I am on vacation or away from my practice and will provide notice of these arrangements when applicable. Please be advised that email communication is not considered confidential, nor is the confidentiality of any information communicated in this way protected.
